How does Panama’s bird watching compare to other hotspots like Costa Rica and Guatemala?

I’ve been to both other countries and am looking to see a little bit more variety, any suggestions?

It comes as a surprise to some birders, but with a purported 904 birds as recorded by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre, Panama actually counts more species of birds than Guatemala (684 sp.) or Costa Rica (838 sp.).  About 100 of these species are found only in Panama.  Compared with Costa Rica and Guatemala, Panama’s got much better roads into their forests, so as far as seeing a greater variety goes Panama’s definitely your best bet—you can go easily from coastal species in dry tropical forests to species located in higher climes all in a single day.
